‘So, there’s a chance Mum could still be alive. Mr Harris says he saw her! Maybe Dad is still alive too,’ she finished, unable to keep the hope from her voice.

Danni frowned. ‘Maybe, but we can’t be absolutely sure that what Mr Harris is said is right, or the truth. And even if he is right, how on earth do we get them back from Monster World?’

‘Mr Harris will come back. He’s a regenerator. You could ask him how to do it, Grace. You’re brave enough. Although it would be very dangerous,’ said Frank, looking out between the slats of an upturned chair.

‘I don’t mind the danger too much, but I’m not sure he’ll want to tell me after I exploded him again. But I’ll come up with something,’ Grace replied. ‘And don’t worry about any of it, Frank. We’ll come up with a really good plan when your dad gets here. Now you’ve seen that we can explode him, you know it’ll all be fine.’

‘I suppose so,’ said Frank. ‘I thought he was going to eat all of us when you mentioned N-Neville.’ He held his fork a little higher. It was trembling.

‘He’d have eaten me ages ago if that’s what he was planning,’ said Grace. ‘It’s annoying that he doesn’t know where Neville is. We’ve got to find him. He’s bound to try and get to the Prime Minister before Mr Harris does.’

‘But if either of them get to the Prime Minister, what are they going to do?’ asked Danni as she measured and mixed ingredients. ‘They can’t just eat her and take over, cyclopes or not.’

‘Both would probably try!’ exclaimed Frank. ‘Mr Harris would eat the Prime Minister in one big gulp, and Neville’s profile says he can shape-shift, so he could be anywhere. And we know how many monster sightings there have been. Dad says they’re an army. And Dad is the best monster-hunter there is . . . apart from you. And your mum and dad.’ Frank looked at the floor at the mention of the girls’ parents.

Danni smiled and put a batch of buns into the oven. ‘You’re right, Frank, he is the best monster-hunter there is. He knows so much.’

‘He’s teaching me,’ said Frank, ‘but I’ll never be as b-brave as he is. Or Grace. I’ve never exploded a m-monster before. Today was the first time I’d been near a really d-dangerous one.’

‘Well, then you’re already really brave,’ said Danni.

Grace nodded. ‘You are. Mr Harris is a pretty serious monster for your first encounter.’

‘But you even told him off when he had lifted you up off the ground! I would have screamed!’ exclaimed Frank.

‘You did what?’ demanded Danni, looking at Grace.

‘Oh, nothing!’ Grace said quickly. ‘Don’t worry about that. Frank, tell us more about what you’ve learned from Max.’

‘W-well, I have a good memory so I’m learning all about the different types of monster. I remember quite a few from M-Monster World too,’ Frank said.

‘Of course!’ said Grace. ‘How much do you remember about your time there, Frank? That is, if you don’t mind talking about it?’

‘I don’t mind.
